CenTrain500 - First circular

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you for a workshop we plan to organize in Budapest at the Ecological Research Institute and Eötvös Loránd University in late October 2021 (Friday-Sunday). We plan an in-person meeting, but in case of a worsening pandemic situation we are prepared for an online meeting as well. The aim of the workshop is to bring together early-career and experienced scientists in the field of long-term paleoecology from Central Eastern and Northern Europe (according to EuroVoc) who work with biotic proxies and use training sets.

Our aim is to initiate the development of regional training sets and quantitative reconstructions for climate and environmental change reconstruction using biological proxies, for example pollen, diatom, chrysophycean cyst, testate amoebae, chironomidae and cladocera assemblages.

The aim of the workshop is to discuss available datasets and prepare for the submission of a Cost Action (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) project proposal. Cost Actions are dedicated to networking activities for European researchers across all scientific disciplines and involve 38 (+1) COST Countries.

Prior to the workshop we plan to prepare a draft Cost Action proposal, therefore we would like to know whether you are interested in as a consortia partner. In scope of the cost action project we would like to focus on last 200 year quantitative reconstructions, biological invasions, land cover reconstructions in alpine and lowland lakes and mires from the study region. During the workshop our task will be to discuss the proposal and receive your suggestions for its finalization. In addition, our aim is to showcase the state of the art

  1. development and refining regional training sets for biotic proxies
  2. education in novel environmental DNA methods application in short sediment cores and regional assessment of last 200 yr community compositional changes (great acceleration, invasion, food web transitions)

At first, we would welcome your confirmation that you are willing to participate in the workshop, your field of expertise, your training set interest and 2) your confirmation that you are generally interested in participating and writing the above mentioned Cost Action Proposal.

We have limited financial source for Early Career Scientists (we define early-career researchers as graduate students and postgraduates within 8 years of receiving their last degree) to cover their travel and/or accommodation for the workshop. Please indicate in your response if you are interested in financial support.

Please, send your answer to CenTrain500@gmail.com

We look forward to hear from you!

All best wishes,
Enikő Magyari, Krisztina Buczkó, János Korponai, Zoltán Szabó (local workshop organizers)
